After you file
When two bio parents live together as a family with their child, the child can only be claimed on ONE tax return. You cannot "share" the child-related credits. Sharing the credits is only allowed for divorced or never married parents who live APART and share custody.
You can amend your own tax return to remove the child from your return (nothing about the child goes on your return), but since you already have put the child's SSN into the system, your GF cannot e-file this year. She can file a return claiming the child and get the child-related credits----but she has to file by mail. Waiting for you to amend will not help her.
She will need to print, sign and date her return in ink, and mail it.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
