After you file

You will be able to claim your child but only if you file by mail now.  You will not be able to e-file this year.  If your child already filed incorrectly and said they cannot be claimed, their SSN will remain in the system way too long for you to e-file this year.  They can amend after their return has been processed, but that takes too long for you.  Print, sign and date your own return, and mai it in.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

If it is any comfort....you have now joined a very large club of parents whose young tax return- filing children have done this and caused them to have to file by mail.
