Right the tax return data files ending in .tax2022 or .tax2021 etc. are not kept in the program. And not in the same directory that the program is installed in. They should be saved in your Documents folder. They are separate files like word or excel documents.
So be sure to save both the .tax file and save your return as a pdf file each year. And make frequent backups on a flash drive or somewhere external in case your computer crashes.
