After you file

So, in other words, you return was not yet processed and you did not actually receive the refund yet?

Did the Audit letter tell you to file an amended return or did it tell you to do something else?

If you need to amend, once you enter your son and your W2's you will see an amount due that includes the amount of your refund you were originally showing.  If you did not receive a refund, then you will need to deduct the difference between the refund and the new amount it shows you owe.

Example.  Your original return showed that you would get a $5,000 refund.  Your new return shows that you owe $6,000.  You will need to send a check for $1,000 instead of $6,000.

To add your son on the return you will log back into your return and click Amend My Return.  Once you click that you will click on the personal info section to add your son and the wages and income section to add your W2's.  You should then be able to e-file your amended return.  If you need to make a payment and are unable to afford the payment, you can set up a payment online.  However, because of the error with the refund and you not having received it, your best option would be to contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 to set up the payment arrangement instead of doing it online.
