Do be aware that the IRS will not begin to accept federal returns until January 23, except for a few that might be accepted early. If you are getting earned income credit or the additional child tax credit, the PATH act means you will not get your refund before the end of February at the earliest.
If you file your federal early you will have to wait until the IRS has accepted it before you will be able to e-file the state. The state cannot accept your return until the IRS has accepted your federal return.
