You misunderstood. If your TurboTax account says "ready to mail" in regard to your 2021 tax return that means the return is ready for YOU to mail in to the IRS. It has not been filed unless YOU put that return in an envelope and mailed it yourself. TurboTax never mails tax returns for you. You will need to print, sign and date the return in ink, and mail it in to the IRS and state. Expect a six to nine month wait for it to be processed.
If you did not pay your TurboTax fees you will need to pay before you can print the return for mail filing.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
