After you file
You should be prepared to amend your tax return when the forms become available. It is important to allow the IRS to process your return before filing the amendment. However, if they release the full refund to you will owe money back with interest and penalty for each day the payment is later than April 18, 2022.
If it starts to get too close to that date, you should file the amendment and pay back any amount due based on the changes in your return assuming you do receive the full refund on your original return. The IRS can take up to two years to match your return with the W-2 they have which would cause undue hardship for you due to interest and penalty for late payment.
It's important to read all the instructions carefully so that TurboTax knows the correct starting figures and the changes.
