After you file

The money you put into your HSA is before taxes. The Form 1099-SA shows that you pulled money out and used it for approved costs. That means the money stays out of the calculation for federal income tax. It is for your records and you do not need to send it with your return. You might have already completed the HSA information when you filled out that section in TurboTax. If there is missing information:

  • The IRS may process the return without these numbers and send you the refund as expected from the return submitted.
  • Or they may flag it, make an adjustment and continue processing the return. In that case, they will send you a letter showing any change made.
  • In some cases they send you a letter asking for more information.

If they don't make any changes and there are additions, after you receive your refund you can amend, or correct, your return for the missing information. There is no additional charge to use Turbo Tax to amend your return.

Tax year 2021 amend form should be available by Feb 24th and you can check that at this list of IRS forms and dates.
