After you file
The most common reasons someone would not receive their expected refund are as follows:
- Return was e-filed and rejected by the IRS. You would have received an email or text from TurboTax telling you that your return was rejected and how to fix it. You can also log back into your return and check the status of your return. If it says rejected, you would just need to follow the steps to fix it. However, at this point it is too late to e-file a 2020 return so you would need to print and mail the return.
- You printed it to mail, but either did not mail it or it got lost in the mail. Have you checked the status of your refund on Where's My Refund? If not, click on the preceding link and check the status. You can also Get Your Transcript online to see if the return has been received and processed.
- You owed back taxes, child support, student loans or something else that caused your refund to be Offset to pay some of the past due debt. You should have received a letter if this was the case.
- Something was not reported correct on your return and the IRS recalculated your return causing you not to have a refund. Again, you should have received a letter if this was the case, although sometimes mail is lost or missed.
If after checking the above links for the status of your return/refund you still do not have an answer, you can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040.
