After you file
@kathyryan28 We are aware that it is September. Several of us have already explained to you that the IRS is backlogged and that the unemployment refunds are being sent out in batches. Calling the IRS will not help you---they only answer a small percentage of their calls, and will not be able to tell you when your own unemployment refund is being sent. You are among many who are still waiting.
Again...
The IRS is recalculating refunds for people whose AGI is $150K or below and who filed before the tax law that changed the amount of unemployment that is taxable on a federal return became effective.
The IRS began to send out the additional refund checks for tax withheld from unemployment in May. The refunds are being sent out in batches—starting with the simplest returns first. If you are eligible for the extra refund for federal tax that was withheld from your unemployment the IRS will be sending you an additional refund sometime during the next several months. TurboTax cannot track or predict when it will be sent. The IRS has not provided a way for you to track it, so all you can do is wait for the refund to arrive.
Please read this news from the IRS:
But if you want to endure the aggravation of trying to call the IRS, go ahead and try.
To call the IRS:IRS: 800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri
Listen to each menu before making the selection.
First choose your language. Press 1 for English.
Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions." It should then transfer you to an agent.
As for an address to write to the IRS about it-----it is taking the IRS months to open mail and process mailed tax returns----they are not going to respond to a letter you write to ask about your refund.
