After you file
The IRS does not ever make direct deposits for amended returns. They will only mail a check to the address on your tax return when you amend your return. So the direct deposit might be the refund for your original return if you did not wait for the IRS to fully process your first return before you amended.
When a direct deposit is sent back to the IRS then it will take several weeks before they mail you a check to replace the direct deposit.
