After you file

Back in 2019, I filed my taxes using direct deposit. I received my first stimulus through direct deposit. After, I had to close that account due to fraud. My second stimulus failed to be deposited into the account due to its closure. When I filed my 2020 taxes in early February, I claimed my stimulus on Turbo Tax for $1800. The timing was a problem because about a week later, the IRS was trying to mail the stimulus check. I was in the middle of moving my family so I never received the check and it was sent back to the IRS. When the IRS finally received my 2020 taxes, they denied the claim because the check was still out there in limbo. Now, the IRS will not physically issue the second stimulus check again and told me that I need to amend my taxes to claim it again.
I have not received my third stimulus payment yet. An IRS representative told me that I needed to claim it by amending my taxes.
You can amend the 2020 tax return for the second stimulus payment not received. But not for the third stimulus since that is sent by the IRS based on either your 2019 or 2020 tax return. If you do not received the third stimulus in 2021, then when filing your 2021 tax return next year you will be able to include the third stimulus as a credit on the 2021 tax return.
An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
