After you file
The tax return must be completed only once. Any changes must be tied to the original filing. It cannot be sent in separately.
You will need to change what has been sent if:
- The original return was e-filed before the unemployment earnings were reported,
- Then, the Unemployment Income Form 1099-G was received and mailed in separately.
- The IRS already has a copy of Form 1099-G. They will not make adjustments to your return if something was completely left off.
To fix this and to begin amending the return, follow these steps:
Step 1: Officially report the Unemployment Income as received by amending (changing) the return:
- With your tax return open after having filed the return, you will be at Tax Home.
- Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Show.
- Select Amend(change) my return and follow the prompts.
- Add your unemployment income. Inside TurboTax, go to the search box and enter 1099-G and select the Jump to link from the search results.
- See this article for more details: Where do I report a 1099-G for unemployment or paid family leave?
- New Exclusion of up to $10,200 of Unemployment Compensation | Internal Revenue Service
- Regarding your state, see TurboTax article: How is my state taxing unemployment income?
For more details, see: How do I amend my 2020 TurboTax Online return?
- Amending the federal return can be done electronically once Form 1040-X becomes available soon. However, unless you live in Georgia, Michigan, New York, or Vermont, any state amended return must be paper filed.
