After you file
Just so you know, even if you amend your tax return, your parents won't be able to e-file their return. They'll have to mail it in.
If you recently e-filed your return, you can't amend a tax return that was just accepted. You'll have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS. Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your return for months.
- Once the IRS has finalized your return, see How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed?
Generally, Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, must be filed within three years of the date the original return was filed, or within two years of the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.
