After you file
To check what banking information was entered for your e-filed tax return, download a copy of your return and see what is printed on on the first page of your federal return summary.
For more information, see: Where can I find my direct deposit account information after I've e-filed?
If the wrong information has been entered, then a paper check will be mailed to the last known address on file.
- Try calling the IRS, but keep in mind they can only adjust the information if the return has not yet posted to their system. Their phone number is 1-800-829-1040 and they are open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM.
- See IRS question and answer: What should I do if I entered an incorrect routing or account number for direct deposit of my refund...
- TurboTax article: What if I entered the wrong bank account for direct deposit?
- The 2020 Form 1040 Instructions, page 60: The IRS isn't responsible for a lost refund if you enter the wrong account information. Check with your financial institution to get the correct routing and account numbers and to make sure your direct deposit will be accepted.
