After you file
It depends on your circumstances.
To not be claimed as a dependent, you must provide more than 50% of your own support. The first and second stimulus payments included an extra payment for children under 17 years old.
- If you are 17 or older, but she provides more than 50% of your support, neither of you will receive any stimulus payments for you, regardless.
- If you do provide more than 50% of your own support, and could not be claimed as a dependent, then you can amend your return.
The amendment can be e-filed once Form 1040-X becomes available. The only states that offer e-file for amended returns are currently Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Vermont. Otherwise, the corresponding state amended return must be paper filed.
To amend, follow these steps:
- With the tax return open after having filed the return, the return will be at Tax Home.
- Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Show.
- Select Amend(change) my return and follow the prompts.
- At My Info on the left menu.
- Scroll down to edit the related information about dependency.
- Run the review again.
