After you file
If the return was already filed, do not try to file it again. Owing $600 involves what was reported.
Yes, you are correct, wait until the two filings are either accepted or rejected. Only the first one submitted will be accepted. The other one will automatically be rejected because the social security number was already submitted.
- For the one that is accepted, check to see what was submitted.
- To see what was filed, open the accepted tax return filed. You will be at Tax Home:
- Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Show
- Navigate to the option to download the PDF of your return so that you can see what was reported as tax owed on page 2, line 37 of Form 1040. The forms are named in the top left and lower right hand corners of each page.
- If you submitted that you owe and really do owe, but cannot pay it, the IRS will allow you to set up payments. You will have to contact the IRS and your state if you owe and cannot pay. See: What if I can't pay my taxes? and How do I contact my state?
- If your return was filed wrong by accident, once it is accepted, you can being amending the return. If you truly do not owe, and file the amended one before April 15, 2021, then you would not need to pay the tax balance initially reported: How do I amend my 2020 TurboTax Online return?

- To see what was filed, open the accepted tax return filed. You will be at Tax Home:
- If neither was accepted, then fix one of the returns by first checking what you have reported for the stimulus payments.Only use one account going forward.
- For the Recovery Rebate Credit, in the search box, type stimulus and click the Jump to link. This is where you report what you have received so far. If you qualify for the stimulus payments, then you will get it on your return. For more details, see: How will the second stimulus impact me?
