If you have proof of the interest paid then simply mail them copies of the 1098 forms to support your deduction. If one was in the taxpayer's name and the other in the spouse's name they may have just not "married" the 2 on your return. You may try calling the number on the notice to see if this can be corrected with a call otherwise put the proof in the mail.
