After you file
"the IRS has no record..."
Does the IRS say that you owe tax due for 2017? Your only proof that you paid will be your own bank/credit card records. TurboTax never knows how, when or even if you paid the IRS (or state).
If you find the account and discover that your return was rejected, that means it was never filed. You would need to print it, sign it and mail it to file it now.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
