After you file
Just adding all of your itemized deductions and comparing it to your standard deduction does not necessarily mean the itemized deductions are greater.
Only your total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted.
The total of State income/Local Income/Sales taxes paid plus property taxes paid are capped at $10,000 if you are Single or Married Filing Jointly ($5,000 if Married Filing Separately).
You can deduct cash donations of up to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).
Standard deductions for 2019
- Single - $12,200 add $1,650 if age 65 or older
- Married Filing Separately - $12,200 add $1,300 if age 65 or older
- Married Filing Jointly - $24,400 add $1,300 for each spouse age 65 or older
- Head of Household - $18,350 add $1,650 if age 65 or older
