After you file

If you filed by mail, in the best of circumstances it can take about 6 weeks to get a Federal refund.  But with the Coronavirus situation, there could be some delay due to personnel shortages.   Mailed returns require manual processing in part.   The IRS is slowed down with some employees not working or perhaps working from home.

Hopefully, you printed, signed, dated, and mailed the returns yourself.  TurboTax does not mail them for you.  And we have seen some users who mistakenly mailed everything to the state tax agency and nothing to the IRS.  So hopefully, if you prepared both returns, you mailed the Federal to the IRS and the state return to the state tax agency.

Four weeks after mailing, you can use the "Where's My Refund" tool at the IRS website below to start monitoring the status of your Federal refund.

NOTE: When using that tool, use only the Federal refund amount, and not any total refund amount that includes a state refund.
The amount to use is on your Federal Form 1040, Line 21a.
