After you file
For your federal return:
When your tax return is accepted by the IRS you can get a pretty good idea of when you will receive your tax refund from the IRS based on acceptance date in the chart with the article link provided below, but please remember these are only estimates: https://www.cpapracticeadvisor.com/tax-compliance/news/21123770/chart-shows-estimated-irs-income-tax.... Typically it takes about 21 days to receive your refund from the IRS when you e-file (tax e-file season started on January 27, 2020) and choose direct deposit as your refund choice. Check your refund status here. For more on the timing of your refund please see this TurboTax FAQ.
Now, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) you may have a delay.
Please see this TurboTax FAQ: Some 2019 federal refunds are delayed due to the PATH Act for more information.
For New Jersey:
Per the New Jersey Division of Taxation: "Generally, we process returns filed using computer software faster than returns filed by paper. Electronic returns typically take a minimum of 4 weeks to process." Track your NJ state refund here.
