After you file

To double check your return to be sure that no education credit was claimed, take a look at your Form 1040 to be sure there is nothing on line 18a.  Also check for Schedule 3 line 3.  

 

If there is an education credit included, you will also have Form 8863 as part of your tax return.  

 

One last place to look is Schedule 1 line 21.  

 

If your return does not have Schedule 1 or Schedule 3, that is nothing to worry about.  It just means those forms were not needed and there is nothing to report.  

 

If there is nothing on any of the lines described above, then you should not need to do anything further with your return.  Your parents should be fine claiming your education expenses.
