Look in your account to see if the 2016 return shows as "accepted", "rejected" or "ready to mail" or "printed"
If it says anything other than "accepted" then it was not filed and you still must print, sign and mail it to IL. It is too late to e-file it.

Did you file the return but not pay the tax due to IL? Do you have any bank/credit card records that show you paid IL? A state tax due cannot be paid from a federal refund. You have to pay the state by check or money order or pay on the state web site.
