Only the TurboTax software for the year of the tax data file can open the tax data file. It has been this way for at least the last thirty years since I have been using the software.
The TurboTax software for the current tax year can transfer the prior year tax data file when starting a New Tax Return for the current tax year.
But to actually open the tax data file to continue the tax return, the TurboTax software for the year of the data file Must be used.
