To clarify, the stimulus payments were reconciled as follows.

The third economic impact payment (3EIP) of $1,400 per person was paid in 2021.  For you this should have been $2,800 (you and your son). The 2021 tax return reconciles this payment using the recovery rebate credit (RRC).  Based on your comments this should be zero on your return if you received the full payment prior to filing your taxes. The 'Federal Review' tab is used to complete this.

The first two economic impact payments (1EIP and 2EIP) were received and reconciled on the 2020 tax return.  If you are missing any of this payment, you may need to amend the 2020 return.

If you are referring to an advance child tax credit (ACTC) payment and the child tax credit (CTC) you believe you should be entitled to this also is reconciled on the 2021 tax return.

The following total amount is what is allowed for each child based on age, and the advance was expected to be no more than half of what would be allowed on the tax return for 2021.

  • $3,600 per qualifying child under 6
  • $3,000 per qualifying child age 6–17

The IRS will know the combined amount and will have a structure in place to identify it.  You can allocate to each of you based on what you would have received for your own children.  It is not yet clear, because they have not had time to post exactly how they want a situation like yours to be handled.
