No, an explanation is not required. Your tax payment will be in your tax account on the IRS website.
When in the File section of the program when asked how you want to pay the federal taxes owed indicate that you will be paying by check. Then when the return is printed for mailing do not include a check or use the Payment Voucher Form 1040-V.
