Don't see how you would have this problem with the software. I have used the TurboTax software for over 15 years and the Taxes Due or the Tax Refund will always change when I add or remove income or add or remove taxes withheld.
Create a fake W-2 and add $50,000+ of income and/or $10,000 of federal taxes withheld. The federal taxes due or refund should immediately change.
