Our refund was calculated at refund of $3,300 but return was only $2,100.  We can't find out why.

The difference is $1,200 and that would indicate an amount for the Recovery Rebate Credit on your federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 30.  The credit is the amount of stimulus payments, EIP1 and EIP2, that you indicated you did not receive from the IRS.

EIP1 was issued in early 2020 in the amount of $1,200 for each taxpayer.  EIP 2 was issued in December 2020 thru February 2021 in the amount of $600 for each taxpayer.

Look at your tax account on the IRS website for each taxpayer's Social Security number, assuming you filed as Married Filing Jointly.

The tax account will show you what the IRS says they sent for each stimulus payment - https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account

If the IRS has records showing the payments were sent then they would remove the credit from your tax return.

If you never received the payments then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payments - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-first-economic-impact-payment-topic-f-p...
