Okay----so either you or the "assistant" had a misunderstanding about what tax year you were trying to get an extension for. As you now know, it would be impossible to get an extension fora past year return in 2021. The only tax year you could get an extension for in 2021 would have been for a 2020 return. So get over it. You do not need an extension if you will be getting a refund for that past year return. Nothing the "assistant" did is going to affect you or keep you from mailing in your past year return. Even if an extension was filed for your 2020 by some mistake...you filed your 2020 return. If you still have not filed your 2018 return, you have plenty of time to file it if you are getting a refund.
