If you've ever gotten an IP PIN or CP01A notice from the IRS, or opted into their IP PIN pilot program, you must enter your 2020 IP PIN to validate your identity so you can e-file.

You'll get this rejection if your IP PIN is missing.

First, find your 6-digit IP PIN

  • Look on the CP01A letter you received in December or January for your 2020 taxes. IP PINs from prior tax years won't work.
  • If you lost or never got your CP01A letter, retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN website.

If you can't find your IP PIN or get it online, we'll give you some other options when you follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button.
  2. On the Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now.
  3. Enter your IP PIN in the field provided and select Continue.
    • If you weren't able to find your IP PIN, select I can't find my IP PIN. We'll give you a phone number to call at the IRS or you can select File by Mail if you can't get a new IP PIN.
  4. Confirm your IP PIN on the Make sure you're using your Identity Protection PIN screen is correct, and then select This is my assigned IP PIN - Continue.
  5. Select the Continue to refile button to e-file your return again.
