Working from home during COVID pandemic
Hello,
I have been working from home (Seattle, WA) since March 3, 2020 because of the pandemic. "Tax relief related to COVID-19" section of the Turbo tax software does not cover working from home aspect. So I have included this under the section, "Employment Expenses" --> Job-related Expenses as Home Office. Please let me know if anything needs to be updated here.
Thanks,
Gulsheen

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct expenses for working from home. Job-related expenses were eliminated as a deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond. Your state tax laws might be different.

Thanks, xmasbaby0, for your prompt response.
IRS should have provided this exception for W2. I used my home as home office and my utility including water expenses have increased.

The IRS has nothing to do with it - Congress makes the tax laws. The 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) eliminated that deduction for 2019-2025.

Thanks, Champ, for clarification.
I think I know the answer to my question, but asking. Is there any way I can report my primary residence (condo that I used as an office since March 3, 2019 till date) HOA as tax deductible expense?

Sorry, IRS does not allow since 2017 on the federal return, but some states do allow on the state returns, so if your state allows it, then you must enter the information on the federal return so it will carry to your state return.

Thanks, Gloriah5200, for your prompt response. Let me check if WA state provides this option.

Washington does not have a state income tax. There are no state income tax forms to file for WA.
