You have to use a 1040 because it's the only 1040 form that remains and everyone has to use it. The new tax laws eliminated the 1040EZ and 1040A. The new 1040 is very short though, and has very little on it, so many items are added on Schedules that attach to the 1040. You can see the items on Schedule 4 at the link given in he prior answer.
