Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Yes, @cwain and @SweetieJean are correct. If your daughter claimed that she could not be claimed by someone else, that could be why your return was rejected.
However, there is another option. You could simply remove her from your return and file without her as a dependent. See item 2 for additional consequences to consider.
1. Check the rules whether she should be considered financially independent.
TurboTax Who can I claim as my dependent? summarizes the rules, which include the following:
Qualifying child
- They're related to you.
- They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
- They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
- They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
- They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
- No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
- They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
- They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
Qualifying relative
- They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
- They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
- They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
- They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
- They lived with you the entire year.
- They made less than $4,300 in 2020.
- You provided more than half of their financial support.
Then, decide what is the most appropriate:
- If you claim her, you will have to mail in the return. It will take at least 16 weeks to process.
- Your daughter must amend: How do I amend my 2020 TurboTax Online return?
- If you do not claim her, remove her from your return and proceed with e-filing. Do not amend because your return was never accepted.
Some other items to consider:
2. If you were previously claiming education credits, keep in mind, that unless she is on your tax return as a dependent, you would not be eligible for these credits.
3. Be sure to run through the stimulus payment reporting, again, to report what was received.
- To get back there in TurboTax, follow these steps:
- Go to the search box and enter stimulus. Click the Jump to link.
- Answer Yes.
- At the next screen, Let's double-check the amount you received, answer No to edit the first-round and second-round amounts.
- If no stimulus amount was received, enter 0. An amount should be entered in each box. When finished, click Continue.
