If you are itemizing your deductions, then this line should be blank.
If you are taking the standard deduction, then this line should be up to $300 for all taxpayers except married filing separate, who would each have a maximum of $150, for cash donations to qualifying organizations.
To get to this section in TurboTax, enter your donations as usual. Then, continue with these steps:
- Run completely through to Wrap Up Tax Breaks.
- Do not leave the Deductions & Credits section until TurboTax has optimized your deductions and you see the screen suggesting that Taking the standard deduction is the best option for you.
- You will then see Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act, highlight everything in the cell and Delete and Continue.
- The amount previously entered should be carried if it qualifies for the extra deduction. By entering something here, it is overriding the calculation in your case. By removing the entry here, it should calculate correctly.
