Correct....the W-2 forms really won't be available for import until late in January....Employers have until 1 Feb to supply them on paper (or as a PDF download).
.....but importing the specially-formatted data may be available a week earlier...or week later, no way to tell. But that's ONLY if your employer works with a W-2 provider that creates a TTX-importable file. IF not, then you will need to enter that data yourself after you get your actual W-2. No, you cannot use a pay stub instead...
