Get your taxes done using TurboTax

@ticejill73

I see now that you have another post in a different thread.  Somehow instead of filing a joint return you filed married filing separately?  That could very definitely affect your refund since MFS disqualifies you for earned income credit and affects some of the other credits you can get if you file jointly.  It sounds like you somehow messed up in My Info and checked that you wanted to file MFS instead of MFJ.  If the IRS is finished processing the return, then you can amend it and fix it to file a joint return.

The trouble is that it takes a long time for the IRS to process an amended return, since you have to mail it.  But in the end it should make a big difference to you to change it to a joint return.

Do NOT try to amend until the IRS has completely processed the first return.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:
