How do I fix a rejected return?

Got rejected? Don't take it personally. We're here to help you figure it out and be done for good.

Step 1: Check your email

The solution to many e-file rejections is as close as your Inbox. Look for an ACTION NEEDED! email from turbotax@intuit.com and follow the instructions.

Didn't get an email? Or you don't understand what you need to do to fix your return? Proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Search on the reject code

All rejection messages are preceded by some type of code, for example IND-031 or R0000-507-01.

Search on that code for instructions on how to fix the rejection.

Tip: For reject codes with dashes, also try searching for the code without the dashes (e.g. IND031 or R000050701).

Step 3: Fix your return

Follow the directions, either from inside your program or in your search results, to fix whatever it was that caused the rejection.

Tip: If the info you originally entered is correct to the best of your belief and knowledge, you won't be able to e-file. There likely is a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or other situation out of your control that prevents you from e-filing. In these cases, you can always paper-file your return by mail.

Step 4: Re-file your return

After completing the previous 3 steps, you're ready to re-file.

In your TurboTax program, click File in the upper-right area (mobile devices: tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).

Follow the onscreen instructions to either e-file your return or file by mail.

Tip: If you get the same rejection a second time (or third, or fourth, or fifth...) and you see no mistakes on your return, it's best to select the file by mail option to paper-file your return.
