Less commonly, you can get reject IND-517-01 if you entered your dependent's Social Security number incorrectly or if someone filed a fraudulent return using your dependent's Social Security number.
First, verify that you entered your Social Security number correctly:
- Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button.
- At the Let’s fix your returns and then refile page, select My Info on the left-hand menu. Don’t select the Fix it now button.
- On the Personal info summary screen, compare your dependent's SSN to the number on their Social Security card.
- If it's wrong, select Edit to fix it. Answer the questions until you get to the Now let's gather [dependent]'s Social Security number screen. When you’ve updated the number, select Continue and you’ll be finished.
Next, follow the set of instructions (I, II, or III) that apply to your situation.
