Thank you

To my knowledge none of us were victims of ID Theft. The error does not state which person is missing or has an incorrect ip pin.

""IND -996 The Dependent/Qualifying Person Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) provided on the return is not valid.""

I went to the website and got a number for myself, re-filed and got rejected again.?

The error you posted DOES say which person is causing the problem.  The error says the dependent's (or "qualifying person's") IP PIN doesn't match.   You didn't mention anyone else being on the return except the 3 of you, so that would point it to the dependent.   That could be for a couple of reasons:  either you entered something there in the IP PIN section for the dependent that was wrong or shouldn't have been entered, or it was not entered at all when the IRS expected to see one.

So, first be sure you didn't originally enter something in the IP PIN section for the dependent when you didn't need to.  That would remove that possibility, and if that's the case, would be an easy solution.   But if the IRS expects to see one (for some reason), you'll still get the rejection until either a correct one is entered or you choose to file by mail.

By the way, is your dependent old enough that he also files a tax return for himself?  If so, have you asked your son if he is aware of having ever needed an IP PIN?

If you used the IRS IP PIN Retrieval tool and got yourself an IP PIN, that will not solve this issue.  It is the dependent that is causing the error message you posted.   Of course, now that you have one for yourself, you will need to use your IP PIN on this return and all of your returns in the future in order to efile. You will need a new one each year.   But you'll still get the dependent rejection until that is also solved.

Otherwise, I don't think this is going to be resolved in a user community forum.   Maybe the IRS will tell you if your dependent is indeed supposed to have an IP PIN, in which case you can use the IP PIN Retrieval Tool to get it.   You can phone the specialized IRS unit that deals with IP PINs at the phone number listed on the page linked below and discuss your issue with them.  There is likely to be a long wait on hold, so I usually use a speaker phone so I can work on something else.    About halfway down that page you'll see an 800 number for that IRS department.

If you want to talk in realtime by phone with TurboTax Support to see if they have any additional suggestion, I've told you below how to reach them.  But they, too, may say you are at the mercy of the IRS to figure out the solution, or to get the dependent an IP PIN with the retrieval tool, or to file your return by mail.  So if it was me, I'd talk to that special IRS department first in case they can tell you how to resolve it, and whether you need to use the retrieval tool to get the dependent an IP PIN.  Like yourself, once a dependent has an IP PIN, he/she has to have one every year in order for you to efile.
