Get your taxes done using TurboTax
The 10% early withdrawal penalty is not assessed when you withdraw funds from a tax deferred retirement account. The penalty is assessed on your tax return Form 1040 Line 59 as a tax liability. The taxes withheld from the withdrawal are entered on the tax return as a tax payment (just like from a W-2). If your total tax payments are greater than your total tax liabilities then you will receive a tax refund for the overpayment. If your total tax payments are less than your total tax liabilities you will have taxes owed.
