Get your taxes done using TurboTax
@Nita1 So many people have added on to this long thread that we cannot tell if you are the parent or the dependent. If you are a full-time student under the age of 24 at the end of 2019, then you can be claimed as a dependent . If you do not say that on your return and you e-file first, it will cause your parent to be unable to e-file this year. Your parent will have to print, sign and mail their return. And you will have to amend your own return after it has been processed by the IRS.
If you are the parent--your dependent can still file a return to seek a tax refund but must say they can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. You do not have to wait for your dependent to amend if your dependent filed first, but you will have to print sign and mail your return now. You cannot e-file this year.
The IRS rules is if you CAN be claimed as a dependent, you must say that on your own return.
