Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Which program are you referring to? Turbo Tax or IRS? In either case, it seems that situation should be able to be accommodated or at least be identified up front so people do not spend time researching. In both years we filed the same way. I just do not understand why it does not work properly. Will I also a problem next year when I file differently.
If your spouse passed away in 2018, then you do not enter your spouse's information on a 2019 tax return. For tax year 2019 you should be filing as Single if you have not remarried and do not have any dependent children.
Using the TurboTax online editions you should have created a new account for 2019, so none of the 2018 information would transfer over.
