Get your taxes done using TurboTax
If you claimed your son but you weren't supposed to and your return is:
- accepted by the IRS, you'll need to amend your return.
- pending, you won't be able to make any changes until it's accepted or rejected by the IRS.
- rejected, you'll be able to remove your son from your income tax return.
IMPORTANT: If you e-filed your return and it was accepted by the IRS, the foster parents won't be able to e-file their tax return. The fact that a return has been e-filed with your son's Social Security Number (SSN) won't allow another return to be e-filed with his SSN.
Note:
- The IRS has not finalized the 2019 Form 1040-X.
- Please click here for a tentative date the form may be finalized.
Once the IRS has finalized Form 1040-X and processed your return, see How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed?
