First of all there was a price increase on March 1 just like for the last several years.  The early discounted prices expired.  The 19.99 to efile a state return goes to 24.99.  

The 39.99 Refund Processing Service charge (44.99 in California) is only if you want to have the fee deducted from your federal refund.  You can pay with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.   What is Refund Processing?

Go back through the File tab and read all the screens carefully and watch what you click on.  There is one that is easy to click on the wrong button at the bottom.
