You can use the steps below to help you enter sales tax purchases. Once in that section of the interview, you'll come to a screen that asks about Major Purchases and answer Yes there and continue. Then you can input those purchases individually.
Keep in mind, the IRS only lets you take either the state sales tax deduction or income tax deduction; not both. And the sales tax deduction will probably benefit you more if any of these apply to you:
- Don’t pay income tax in your state (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, or Wyoming)
- Made a major purchase and paid a lot of sales tax
- Paid more in sales tax than income tax
- Lived in a state with high state and local sales tax rates
