There must be something in your taxes that requires an upgrade. The most common reason we have seen is that you need to report income on Schedule 1.
I suggest you try Free File Edition. It is not quite the same as Free Edition and has no upgrade fees.
To you qualify
Make less than $34,000 a year or
Qualify for the Earned Income Credit or
Active military making less than $66,000
