If you only earned $500, then you could get a very tiny amount of earned income credit by claiming her -- less than $200.  You did not support a child on $500.  Did someone else actually support you and your child?  That person could likely claim both of you as dependents.  And if you ARE being claimed as someone else's dependent, you cannot claim a dependent of your own.  If someone else already claimed you or your child, that is why your own return is being rejected.
