Yes, you can change your mind and file a joint return no matter what you indicated on your W-4 at work.  Your W-4 just tells the employer how much tax you want to have withheld.  It does not dictate how you have to file your tax return.  married filing jointly is almost always a better way to file. Both spouses must agree to file the joint return.
