Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Is it giving you the Other Dependent Credit instead of the Child Tax Credit or is it giving you the Additional Child Tax Credit?
Even though your child has the SSN, you would not be eligible for the Child Tax credit due to not having a SSN, unless you are filing a joint return and your spouse has a SSN that is valid for work.
Who qualifies for the Child Tax Credit/Additional Child Tax Credit
To qualify for the Child Tax Credit, you (or your spouse, if married filing jointly,) and each qualifying child must have a Social Security number that is valid for employment in the United States and issued before the due date of the tax return (including extensions).
Credits and deductions you can claim with an ITIN are:
- Standard deduction
- Itemized Deduction
- Child and Dependent Care Credit
- Premium Tax Credit if lawfully present
- Other Dependent Credit
